Aim: How does the setting of the novel contribute to the mood and tone of 1984?
Do Now: (Turn & Talk) Consider your knowledge of Oceania thus far. What words, which provide “tone” might you use to describe Oceania? Explain your word choice.
My answers: Organized (everything is done a certain way), strict (many rules must be followed), censored (many freedoms have been stripped from the people),
My classes answers: dreary, dystopian, fabricated, oppressive, bleak, manipulative, tragic, hostile, grim.
What is TONE & MOOD? How do they differ?
TONE: Think of TONE as demonstrating how the SPEAKER feels.
MOOD: Think of MOOD as how the READER feels.

How would you compare Winston’s tone to the reader’s mood?
Winston’s tone is very detective, and as for us we also want to know what is going on in Oceania.
How does his tone compare to the rest of Oceania?
The rest of Oceania is ignorant and naive for trusting Big Brother and not questioning anything.

SETTING: Is the time, place, physical details and circumstances in which a story occurs. They include the background, atmosphere, or environment in which characters live and move, and usu. include physical characteristics of the surroundings.

1) Why is SETTING important? Setting affects the mood and events. The setting also affects how big of an impact the events have.
2) How does it contribute to the meaning of the work as a whole? The setting sets up the entire plot of the story. It shows us how the world the characters live in is like and how their world is different than ours.
Palimpsest (the p after the m is silent): A manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing but of which traces remain.
Working from home is very difficult especially with the technical difficulties we face. I couldn’t even access the Blogging from home sheet before writing my blog. Sometimes it’s hard to focus when having school in my house because my family is very distracting and loud. On the other hand the comfort of being home is really nice and I’m definitely less tired without having to wake up at 6:20.
Right now it seems like COVID-19s rampage is slowing down but we are all still in quarantine. Slowly, in other places, things are reopening, but not yet in New York. The AP Exams were just administered online and the college board is receiving backlash for the technical difficulties and time constraints of the test. As a student, it’s pretty interesting to see other students' experiences on the same tests I took online.
The reading for these chapters was very similar to Animal Farm. The communism and corruption of government in Animal Farm is paralleled in 1984. Seeing how Orwell thought 1984 would play out was very different from what actually happened but maybe these ideas could’ve been applied to further into our future.
