Blogger #26, Viviana Rescalvo Orea, Period 1, 3/24/21, Day A

Aim 1: How can we use the poem, “This is Just to Say” by William Carlos Williams as inspiration for our own poems?

Aim 2: How has poetic expression evolved in the 21st century?

Lesson #1

The do now for this lesson was a class discussion on describing a time when you or someone you know did something that was technically wrong and you should have felt sorry for it but you didn’t. Most people talked about siblings or friends and how they accidentally wronged them in some way but were not regretful. This discussion was to get our brains going for upcoming discussions.

We next took a look at “This Is Just To Say” by William Carlos Williams.

As we can notice, this poem is very short and does not have rhythm or rhyme. Did you know that this poem was just a quick note that William left for his wife in the morning? This comes to show that these types of poems can be written just about anything and can be quick and easy. Now it was our classes time to write our own poems!

An example from my poems:
From the little blue box, in which his money hides
I grab 10 dollars, from my brothers box, he's taken only 5 from me,
It's only the right thing to do

An example from a student:
"sorry I burnt your house down, I just wanted you to come live with me"

Imagery plays a big part in poetry. It can create feelings or expose us to our own feelings in poems. When we say our feelings straight up, they might not have much impact. However, if we create images with our feelings, the reader will be able to experience how we feel.
Here is a video that can help understand imagery better:

This is an example of imagery in poetry:

My heart was warm,

Like the swelling waters of the ocean,

Just basking in the first rays of morning sun

We then moved on to “Fast Break” by Edward Hirsch

Theme/main idea of the poem is how teamwork can achieve a lot. This poem has limited punctuation and the author maybe wants it to be continuous. A basketball game is non stop action and he wanted his poem to portray that.

There were many literary devices and techniques as well as examples of imagery in the poem. Here is my chart based on what I found.

Lesson #2

The do now was discussing whether or not we believe technology and the 21st century are ruining literature as we know it? Why or why not? Some people stated that technology and apps, such as tiktok, aid in the spreading of literature. Another added that literature is a perspective. That way people will view it differently over time.

A video that can explain some more is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSYw502dJNY

Poetry can be found anywhere, especially on apps such as twitter and instagram. There are also some famous books that contain some of the poems that are very popular. For example Rupi Kaur is very well known for her books like “Milk and Honey”.

Micropoetry:
Micropoetry is a genre of poetic verse which is characterized by its extreme brevity. In other words, a micropoem is a short poem.

This activity was optional

Reflection

The influence of imagery in a poem will definitely be carried inside of me for a long time. This lesson taught me how imagery and literary devices are embedded into poems even if we don’t realize it. Poems can be short but meaningful in many different ways. They can be a micropoem or a “This Is Just To Say” poem. When it was my turn to write a poem, it came so much more naturally once I grasped the information and learned how I could apply it. The discussions and the contributions from my classmates assisted me in the full understanding of how I can improve on my own poems and how poems can be viewed in different ways today.
