Blogger #29 - Samuel Szeto - Period 1 - 4/5/2020 - Day A

Aim: How are metaphors used by writers to send a message to readers?

Do now: Complete the following

Love is ……

Metaphor: A comparison where one thing or idea is substituted for another. It is different form a simile where a simile uses like, as to compare two things or ideas.

A metaphor is implying the comparison, like the tree is a skyscraper, you are implying that the tree is as tall as a skyscraper, compared to a simile where it is explicitly saying “The tree is as tall as a skyscraper”.

When implying they don’t mean it literally, the tree is a skyscraper doesn’t mean it is literally one, it means that it shares the characteristics, long , tall, expansive.

It is often used with the verb(is, am , are , was ,were , will be , being, been , could , should , would, has , have ,having , had , may , might , must)

Note: A metaphor does not use “Like or as”

Extended metaphors are metaphors that are spread across several lines, often implying its importance to the theme and message.

You have to annotate important parts that pop up at you for this poem.

For this following poem you have to annotate its importance as well and answer the following

1)How does the author utilize the extended metaphor to express a theme or message to the reader?

Read and annotate the text

What extended metaphor is used in the poem?

What is Hughes expressing through the use of this metaphor? (think about what the “crystal stair” and the “tacks”/”splinters” might represent.)

Look specifically at the final stanza: what is the mother’s message to her son?

  1. How does this poem utilize an extended metaphor?

  2. What does the rose represent? What about the concrete?

  3. Compare the two poems.

How do both poems use an extended metaphor to express a common theme or message to the reader? (What are these extended metaphors and what is the common theme?)
