Blogger #6 - Eric Chi, Period 1 - 11/9/2020 Day A, Freshmen 2021

Aim: How has poetic expression evolved in the 21st century?

Do Now: TEAM DISCUSSION

With your TEAMS discuss the following; Do you believe technology and the 21st century are ruining literature as we know it? Why or why not?

We started the class by going into our teams/break out rooms to discuss this do now question. Our group had mixed opinions on this, some thought technology was ruining literature, and some thought that literature would actually be enhanced through technology. To add on, illegal copies of literature would go through the world wide web causing the author to lose money. The author’s hard work of writing and publishing would turn out to be free from the widespread of media and illegal activity through technology. On the other hand, technology may also spread literature in a legal way, where the author may get money. This can be done on a different platform like audible and kindle where they sell e-books. All in all, this discussion had plenty of interesting opinions.

Rupi Kaur created a trend with her literature, specifically her poetry. She starred on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, a show where only a few could be on. She describes her story of how her books were published and the beginning of the sensation of this modern literature. She goes on to show one of her favorite pieces that she wrote that shows her emotions towards these critics by many people.

These are some of the few poems that you might like to know for a deeper understanding.

I feel like this micro poem mainly directs towards the challenges and disabilities of the many people in the world. Challenges may come up at times, but some people ignore and move on to create a better situation instead of keeping it that way. As Rupi would say it, “there is nothing purer than that.”

This poem is trying to show you how you need positive energy in life, generally speaking to those who may have negative energy. Rupi shows how she wants someone who’s energetic and positive to be around her instead of the low energy. The drawing on the side of the poem also gives a good example of this energy, flowers with a few dragonflies hanging around.

“You love me, and I love you. Your head hurts, mine does too. And it’s just words and they cut deep but it’s our world, it’s just us two.”

- Drake

Even song lyrics may be portrayed as poetry, like the example shown above by Drake. These lyrics were taken from his song “Look What You’ve Done.” The song was released around 2011 where it received around over a million streams/views.

Can Instagram Make Poems Sell Again? By John Maher

We, later on, read this piece of text together in class through the use of “spirit reading” to feel more connected to this article. This article basically shows how Rupi Kaur became the sensation that she is now and the age of poetry that it has started. It started as a hobby by posting her works on Instagram but, later on, became a job/life. Rupi started getting the attention of many people and created her book that was a #1 best seller for a few weeks. The article then shows the other uprising poets that are inspired by the works of Rupi and the criticism of Rupi. This generation of poetry is super different from writing on paper in older generations. We now share our thoughts and literature through social media platforms now.

Homework

We were told to finish the work that was not finished in class and to create a micro poem by ourselves. It had a theme of the micro poems shown in social media. You had to make a poem that had less than 280 characters and or create a poem that fits the needs of Instagram.

What Did You Learn Today?

Reflection - What did I learn?

I learned about the new forms and age of literature. This era now composes literature that is short and simple but still touches your heart and mind. Social media is mainly for these poets authors to express their feelings with literature. I found social media is able to make people a living, for people like Rupi Kaur. She didn’t know how to communicate with others so she sparked her interest in drawing and writing. As a side hobby, she posts her works on Instagram and later becomes a sensation. Her books were #1 selling and became looked up to by many who were inspired. I guess the age of technology will bring literature to the next level.

Reflection - Why did I learn it?

I learned it because it was an inspiration to me, I feel like if you want to do something then you have to put all your effort into it. Just like the book that she made, it was all done by her, she wrote, published, and illustrated it. It just shows how far hard work would come, doing all the work by herself later paid off, as she is able to keep most of the income and money coming in. Rupi’s poems and works also make me think of life in another way, it brings a whole new perspective in how life works. All in all, I learned this to feel more inspired to do something.

Reflection - How will I use what I learned?

In the future, I would like to try hard and do whatever I can at the best level. Like what Rupi did, she risked some things to pursue this book. When doing something, you take risks but you have to keep striving. A business is something that I feel like doing in the future, I hope these words and thoughts stay in my mind so I can have a successful business. This is all I learned in the lesson today.
