Blogger #6 - Liaowei Lan - Period 6 - 11/10/20 - Day C - Freshman 2021

Aim: How has poetic expression evolved in the 21st century?

Do Now: TEAM DISCUSSION

With your TEAMS discuss the following; Do you believe technology and the 21st century are ruining literature as we know it? Why or why not?

At the beginning of the lesson, we were split into our teams in breakout rooms, and discussed the Do Now question. My team argued that new technology in the 21st century was ruining literature, with the main reason being books are becoming less and less useful. Books are becoming less and less useful because everybody has some sort of device to view their “e-books”. Another reason is because social media and the people on the internet are developing new words and ways to talk, or text, which is mostly improper and grammatically incorrect. One example would be abbreviations, which would be: LOL, BRB, or GTG.

Another team argued that technology enhanced and improved the skill of writing, since technology allows literature to be more accessible. However, they also added that technology would be distracting.

After the discussion of the Do Now question, the class did a bit of spirit reading on the poems of Rupi Kaur, then watched a video about Rupi Kaur’s journey on becoming an author, with Jimmy Fallon. Rupi Kaur grew up knowing barely any English, so she read a lot of books in order to learn English. Eventually, she created poems that people liked and enjoyed. Later, she would stop focusing on school to self-publish a book, because she was poor at the time. People appreciated her work so much that one person tattooed one of Rupi Kaur’s drawings on their arm.

Where can we find poetry?

Poetry can be found on Instagram, Twitter, and even song lyrics. The class spirit read

poems from Instagram and Twitter, and also song lyrics. Some examples of song lyrics

were by Ariana Grande, Drake, and Lewis Capaldi. Another type of poetry is epic poetry,

which is a genre of classical poetry where a long narrative poem describes the heroic

deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet. There is also another

type of poetry called micropoetry. Which is a short poem, or a genre of poetic verse which

is characterized by its extreme brevity. Micropoems are generally under 140 to 280 characters,

but there is no real length limit. It is usually decided by the platform that is being shared on.

Activity:

#micropoemchallenge!

Classmates are required to create a short poem under the twitter character limit, which is about 140 or 280.

Here are some poems from my classmates:

“Be careful

Of

Stories told

About rebellion,

Teamwork

Be careful

Of

Stories of winning,

Burning

They might ignite a fire

And it will not dim.”

“I walk

I run

I crawl

I trudge on

Through the darkness

And into the light”

My poem:

“Wake up

Just to realize

We are all in a

Continuous loop with

The same work

The same activities

The same cycles”

Reflection:

Today I learned that poems can be very short, and can also express many things. I also

never actually realized poems are posted on social media, like Instagram and Twitter. I

also discovered Rupi Kaur which is a very talented poet that associates with social

media in the 21st century.
