George Athanasopoulos- Period 3- 02/05

February 5th, 2020
George Athanasopoulos, Period 3
Aim: Why is “The Declaration of Independence” symbolized as a valuable document for our society?

DO NOW: 1) HOW WOULD YOU EXPLAIN WHAT YOUR RIGHTS ARE AS AN
INDIVIDUAL LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES? WHY? 2) WHY DO YOU
BELIEVE AN INDIVIDUAL’S RIGHTS ARE SO IMPORTANT TO SOCIETY?

We all have different human rights that we’re born with and then other rights that differ from
different countries. An individual’s rights are important to society because it guarantees that everyone is treated fairly and equally and has the same opportunities.

Today we mostly just had discussions on what we talked about. The questions were mostly about the declaration of Independence and the different rights people are guaranteed. We learned about the rights we have and the difference between federal and state laws and how we have the right to stand up for our rights. Our group spent a while talking about what the Declaration of Independence meant at the time and how it’s changed throughout the years. At first the rights were given to only white men with property but as our nation developed as a society we strived to improve and be more inclusive in these rights allowing equal rights to all. Then that led to a discussion on affirmative action and both the benefits and downsides of this law.

Reflection

In conclusion today was a really educational day. I learned a lot about diversity and affirmative action. I learned about our different rights and how they vary from state to state and how they all fall under the umbrella of the general federal laws. I found these discussions really interesting and I’m excited to see how this all fits into 12 Angry men.
