Aim: How can we analyze the importance of names, while symbolically analyzing the characters of the novel?

GROUP TEAM WORK:
What’s in a Name?
A name has a meaning to it. It is what gives a person their identity and place in the world.

Do Now:
Why might what a person is named matter?
  • A name defines who a person is.
  • A name is a way people can remember legacies.
    • To pass down memories
  • A name is something a person will have for the rest of their life.
    • It should mean something to them.

Brainstorm the ways your name can impact outcomes.
  • Your names can impact outcomes by changing how you are identified in society.
  • If you have a name similar to that of a criminal, terrible event, etc, people might not approach you and talk to you for it.
  • Sometimes names can prevent people from obtaining certain opportunities, such as jobs and a place in society.

Do you believe that people should change their names, if they can yield negative results? Why/Why not?
  • I believe people should change their names if they are being harassed or devalued for what their name is. A name is important to someone and it shouldn’t be a reason for why someone is bullying them.

Classwork: What’s in a Name?

Reflection:
In today’s lesson, we learned about the importance of a name and what it might mean to people. We discussed as a class that a name can define someone and can have a meaning to who they are. After our discussion, we moved onto applying what we talked about to Animal Farm. As we know, Animal Farm is a fable with talking animals so we analyzed the names of the characters in the first chapter of the book. For example, Mr. Jones was one of the first characters we see and we can relate him to historical figures like Tsar Nicholas II.
