Blogger #19 - Darren Lin - Period 5 - 5/10/21 - Day B

Aim: How does the episode of "The Land of the Dead" further our understanding of Odysseus as the epic hero?

Do Now: WHOLE CLASS DISCUSSION

What are some of the cultural traditions we use to honor the dead?

Consider your culture and/or religion - What do you and your family do in order to mourn the passing of a loved one?

How might these traditions be observed in order to honor fallen warriors & soldiers?

We discussed cultural traditions used to honor the dead. For my family , we visit their graves, lay flowers, and sometimes speak to them( tombstone).Afterwards, we would go to a restaurant to eat and celebrate. Other traditions include celebrating and remembering what the deceased did in life.

After the class discussion we talked about the Underworld and Death. We watched the following video :
The Underworld: The kingdom of Hades - Greek Mythology Curiosities - See U in History [3:50]

We did a bit of spirit reading on the land of the dead
“Land of the Dead”

Following the reading, we split into breakout rooms to discuss questions

Reflection for this lesson: I learned about the land of the dead and what the Underworld was like. I also learned about some of the cultural traditions that different cultures have on honoring the dead. I learned this to help my understanding of Odysseus.

How would you define the term “flattery”? Review the “3” Morals of Aesop’s Fable, below.
I think flattery is fake admiration or fake compliments to help with a person's own cause

What do you believe the morals advise?

  • Flattery is a dangerous weapon in the hands of the enemy.

  • Flattery is not proof of admiration.

  • He who listens to flattery is not wise, for it has no good purpose.

These morals advise us not to be fooled by flattery and be smarter

We then talked about the sirens and who they were. The image above describes sirens as seductive creatures that lure sailors to their deaths. We also watched a YouTube video that talked about the sirens.
Sirens: The Seductive Creatures of Greek Mythology - Mythology Dictionary #15 - See U in History [2:00]
After the video we did spirit reading “The Sirens”

We did more teamwork questions to earn points. Last we read the sirens song
