Aim: How are the readers of 1984 warned about the power
of manipulation?

Class notes:
Do now:
  1. Can you alter your own feelings by force of will? Why/Why Not? No, because feelings are a subconscious action.
  2. Can someone else alter another person’s innermost feelings? No, because, again, feelings are subconscious.

Discussion:
  1. Why was there such difficulty recording what happened? Memories change and/or get “corrupted”.
  2. Why is it so easy to forget what transpired, even though only a couple of days had passed? Human memory is easily malleable, thus we can forget a lot of things soon after the events transpire.
  3. How can forgetting leave people vulnerable? Forgetting can leave people vulnerable because then other people can implant false memories, causing unnecessary problems.

My thoughts:

Reflection:
Today we reflected upon the part of the book that we read as a whole, as well as the relationship between Julia and Winston. Their relationship shows us readers that, although there are activities that are illegal, if nobody sees anything it didn’t happen.
